Fish crates, vegetable crates, beer crates and storage boxes are some of the largest plastic products made on injection molding machines. Their molds cover a big area, so the machine needs both enough clamp force and enough space between the tie bars to hold the mold.

Typical machine requirements: around 200–530 tonnes of clamp force, generous tie-bar spacing for the mold footprint, enough shot weight for thick-walled parts and their runners, and enough mold height for deep molds. Larger crates sit at the higher end of the range.

The figures below are typical industry guidance — the right machine always depends on your exact mold and product.

• Clamp force: ~200–530T for most crate and box work (larger crates need the higher end)
